May 2008

Staff Appreciation

Hingham Public Schools faculty and staff gathered Wednesday, May 21 for the Annual Staff Appreciation Reception at South Shore Baptist Church. The annual event, sponsored in part by the Hingham Education Foundation, is an opportunity to thank all of the hardworking personnel for another year of accomplishments and to commend some of Hingham's longest serving teachers by presenting them with "Golden Apple" awards. It is also a chance for the Foundation to publicly announce its 2008-2009 Grants which totaled a record $128,000 this year.

As in the past, the School Committee and Administration recognized teachers whose careers have spanned thirty and forty years with the "Golden Apple" award for their continued commitment to education in Hingham. The 2008 30th year "Golden Apple" award recipients were Mary Lou Dowd, Mary Eastwood, David Greenberg and David Whiting. The 2008 40th year “Golden Apple” award recipients were Steve Olson and Donna Savage.

Hingham Public Schools Superintendent Dorothy Galo honored each of the award winners by reading bios which highlighted each teacher or staff member's background, personality, career, various contributions they have made to the schools both inside and outside of the classroom.
School Committee Chairman Chrisanne Gregoire also acknowledged Galo with a Special Honor Service Award for her 45 years of service to the Hingham Public Schools.

The Foundation announced the recipients of their 2008-2009 Major and Mini Grants. The grants were awarded to teachers and will be used for developing innovative teaching strategies, special programs, new materials and books, classroom projects and improving technology in the upcoming school year.

The Foundation's president Elaine Hoey Gomez said that the Foundation “broke an important record this year. Over $128,000 was awarded in grants, up from $90,000 last year.”

Among the Grants awarded that will benefit all of the schools were a Media Server for teachers to access 7700+ video clips, Lego Mindstorm Robotics kits, Handwriting Lending Libraries, Plant models and specimens, professional development programs, and new technology.

Gomez also announced the launch of the Foundation’s new initiative the “Get SMART” campaign, targeting local businesses seeking to raise money for 50 SMART Boards, as requested by teachers of the Hingham Public Schools.

Students Help Raise Funds for Schools

  Phoneathon 2007

Hingham Journal - October 12, 2007

Over one hundred Hingham High School student volunteers called Hingham residents on October 9, 10 and 11 to ask for pledges on behalf of the Hingham Education Foundation for their annual Phone-a-thon.

Thanks to the continued generosity of the community, the students solicited $32,350 in pledges to benefit the Foundation’s Grant programs. Hingham Public Schools’ teachers and staff apply for grants each year to fund educational enrichment initiatives that go beyond the regular curriculum and budget.

The Hingham Education Foundation, chartered in 1992, is an independent non-profit organization that raises money to benefit the five Hingham Public Schools. This year, 35 grants were awarded to the five schools totaling over $90,000.

Coldwell Banker Real Estate and William Raveis Real Estate graciously lent their phone lines for the three evenings.

The Foundation would like to thank everyone who pledged and all of the student volunteers from the HHS National Honor Society and Student Council, Deanne Moore, Kara Roth, Paula Girouard McCann, Carol O’Neil, Monadnock Spring Water, The Hingham Journal, Carol Ryan Mailing Services, and Peacock Press Printing Services.
